Relle’s Recipes: Za’atar Spice Blend
Za’atar is an oregano-like herb and also a Middle Eastern spice blend (I know, confusing). We grew za’atar in the garden, dried it, and blended it with a mixture of other herbs and spices.
Enjoy on really anything - we like it on eggs, flatbreads, and as an all-purpose seasoning.
(adapted from Salma Hage’s The Lebanese Cookbook)
Ingredients (makes 7 oz)
5 tablespoons olive oil (the best you have)
7 tablespoons dried za’atar
2 tablespoons dried thyme
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
3 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted
2 teaspoons sumac
Mix all ingredients together and store in an air-tight container.
Spice blend will stay fresh for 6-12 months.
